Sam taught the kids how to make a kite out of bamboo and a trash bag, and I thought this was a fitting metaphor for education. Check it out!
It isn’t hard to find kites in stores for cheap. We’ve found cheap and easy ways to manufacture them, so if you want to fly a kite, just head to a store. But what’s more satisfying to fly? Something mass produced that you just picked up from a store, or something you built yourself?
Some kids fit nicely into the education system. They’ve got carbon fiber tubes, polyester, and whatever else they need to succeed. Other kids get bamboo and trash bags. The standardization doesn’t work for them. Because of that, they’re called failures, and they’re just tossed out to fend for themselves.
But when someone who knows how to help them comes along… Watch how well they can succeed.
These kids have to work harder. The things that come naturally for others feel impossible to them. But they can succeed. And when they do, it’s amazing to watch.
Also, after the hour and a half to take this off the ground, Nacho took five minutes to make a kite out of a single piece of notebook paper and a thin string.
I’m sure there’s an equally profound metaphor in that one.
